Grass verges
Weston Turville Parish Council
Why Are Some Verges Cut and Others Left to Grow?
You may have noticed that some grassy areas around the Village are being left to grow longer, while others are still regularly mown. This is all part of a planned approach to encourage wildlife, support pollinators, and enhance the beauty of our Village — not a case of forgotten maintenance!
Here’s what’s happening and why:
🌱 A Balanced Approach
We're managing different areas in different ways to get the best of both worlds:
- Some verges are cut regularly to maintain clear sightlines for road safety and keep paths accessible.
- Other areas are left to grow longer during spring and summer to allow wildflowers and grasses to thrive, providing vital food and shelter for bees, butterflies, birds, and other wildlife.
🌼 Wildflower Beds
We’re also creating and caring for wildflower patches in selected spots around the village. These areas:
- Are not weedy or neglected – they’re being managed carefully to encourage native wildflowers to establish over time.
- May look a bit wild at first, but that's exactly how they support biodiversity. As they mature, they’ll provide colourful displays and attract a range of pollinators.
- Are usually cut once or twice a year (late summer and/or autumn) to allow plants to set seed and come back stronger the following year.
🐝 Why It Matters
- Pollinators are in decline and need food-rich habitats.
- Longer grass and wildflowers increase biodiversity, helping insects, birds, and small mammals.
✅ Not Forgotten – Part of the Plan!
Rest assured, no area has been forgotten or ignored. Every part of the Village is being looked after with care — whether that means regular mowing or a wilder, nature-friendly approach. We’re working hard to strike the right balance between neatness, nature, and community needs.
Thank you for supporting a greener, more wildlife-friendly Village — and helping us show that a “Best Kept Village” can also be a Nature-Friendly Village.
